But when we click on "Blobs" in the left-side Blob Service part of the menu, the containers are listed - however when clicking on any of them we get the above notice.

Is it possible the ReadOnly lock was applied at the Resource Group or Subscription level? The only way you would see the above error is if an Administrator/owner on the subscription applied the lock. Is this a shared environment? I would recommend you audit the Activity logs for the subscription over the last 24-48 hrs to see if any of your Admins made this change. If not, please let me know and we can investigate further.
