Hi,

I'm researching on DTU. While, I do understand that its a blended measure of CPU, memory, I/o cycles. However, I want to know what exactly counts as 1 DTU (in layman terms). 

For example, if I'm processing a transaction on a Point of Sales system, would that transaction count as 1 DTU (or) if I'm mapping data from Azure to Power BI for reporting and if I generate a report or refresh the existing reports, would that count as 1 DTU or more.

Sorry, I have just started in this filed and don't have a great understanding.

A Database Transaction Unit DTU is a unit of measure of the resources that are guaranteed to be available to an Azure SQL database at a specific performance level.

  • Measures how powerful your database is!

  • It is based on a Microsoft OLTP benchmark.
  • Higher DTUs provide higher throughput

A DTU is a unit of measure for the performance of a service tier and is a summary of several database characteristics. Each service tier has a certain number of DTUs assigned to it as an easy way to compare the performance level of one tier versus another.

DTUs provide a way to describe the relative capacity of a performance level of Basic, Standard, and Premium databases. DTUs are based on a blended measure of CPU, memory, reads, and writes. As DTUs increase, the power offered by the performance level increases. For example, a performance level with 5 DTUs has five times more power than a performance level with 1 DTU. A maximum DTU quota applies to each server.

Example: DTU Performance

  • Basic => 5 DTUs => 10 queries => 60 seconds
  • Standard => 100 DTUs => 10 queries => 3 seconds
  • Premium => 1000 DTUs => 10 queries => 0.3 seconds
