Question about Azure restores of vhds.  Currently I'm testing vhd restores.  Only backups older than 7 days are restoring vhd successfully (ie. vault only).  Anything newer just restores the json files so I'm assuming there are additional steps.  All backups are application consistent.

For managed disks restore, the storage account will have only JSONs and the target resource group you have selected will have managed disks. This is true for all recovery points.

For unmanaged disks restore, in case the recovery point is marked as "Snapshot and vault" and if you have selected "use Storage Accounts of original VM", the given storage account will have only JSONs and the disks will be restored to the original storage accounts

For unmanaged disks restore, in case the recovery point is marked as "Snapshot and vault" and if you didn't select "Use Storage Accounts of original VM" OR the recovery point is marked as "Vault", the given storage account will have both JSONs and disks.
