We have hundreds of different posters in our forum and we don't want to have tag proliferation of similar strings.  Like "Remote", "Remote Access", "Accessing Remotely", "Remote Access Web Site", "Accessing Computer while away from home" ...

We would like to have a defined list of tags that non-moderators can choose from when they want to tag a post, and then the moderators of the forum managed the available list of tags that people can see and use.

There's a lot of debate on this issue, and some early threads in this forum actually too. We have some functionality coming that will make tagging more useful, and as more people tag, the tags in the cloud will become more relevant for discoverability of content. We'd like to keep tags a bottom up (all users contributed) approach to discoverability, rather than one that needs to be managed.
