Currently my sharepoint is installed to say in abc domain and I am able to add users and manage permission for abc domain.

Now I need to provide access to sharepoint to our xyz domain but I am unable to add users of xyz domain.

Domain trust needs to be established first and you need to reach out to your server team to do so. After that depending on level of trust (One or two way) people picker should be configured accordingly.
