I've been searching and reading a lot of documentation from Microsoft about planned maintenance. But I still have doubts about how can I properly adjust a planned maintenance according to my needs. There is nothing out of the box that would allow you to simulate planned maintenance. That being said, there really is not much to it. When we have planned maintenance in Azure we will send out a notification informing you of a date when maintenance will occur. Weeks before that date, we offer each customer the option to perform the maintenance at their own leisure. This means we will track which of your VMs need to be moved to a new node and will guide you through the process of completing the maintenance yourself. That way you can do it outside of business hours.

As per what needs to be done on your end when planned maintenance is announced is simply stop and start each node in your scaleset. Or stop and start the whole scaleset at once if you like. This will move your virtual machines to hosts in the Azure data center that have already been updated. Once that is complete, you are able to see in the portal that maintenance of those machines are complete and there is nothing left for you to do.

We will have a notification pop up in the portal for customers who need to perform this stop/ start action. However, if no action is needed from you then that alert will not pop up.

You can also go to the Help+Support blade in the portal and then select Service Health then Planned Maintenance. This will provide you with additional information around any planned maintenance events

Finally, all you need to do in order to ensure your VMs are good for any maintenance events is

1) Perform the maintenance operations before the due date so you have control over when it happens
