I would appreciate some guidance on how best to address my SharePoint 2013 project task calendar issue.
Calendar Requirements:
(a) Project Task list is managed by user through Microsoft Project.
(b) Monthly Calendar view of Starting and Finishing Tasks Only (Do not display the task/event duration bar in the calendar)
(c) Each Resource Name (e.g. Finance, IT,… - 7 total) is to be color coded.
(d) Link to SharePoint Calendar to Outlook.
Background:
(a) I am not a SharePoint Guru!
(b) SharePoint 2013 site created using Project Site Template.
(c) I am site administrator with Full Control Permission Level.
(c) Corporate IT restricts site administrator’s ability to modify templates (cannot modify code).
(d) Task List synchronization works perfectly updating SharePoint Project Task List with WBS, Task Name, Start Date, Finish Date, Duration, % Complete and Resource Name with each save of MS Project Plan.
Prior Actions:
Calendar overlays:
(a) Created a Separate Calendar view of each Resource Name’s Task Start Dates
(b) Created a Separate Calendar view of each Resource Name’s Task Finish Dates
(c) Created an Separate Calendar Overlay for each Resource Name combining the two calendar views (Start & Finish Dates)
RESULT: Calendar display worked for each of the 7 Resource Names
(d) Created a Separate Calendar Overlay combining each of the Resource Name Calendar Overlays.
RESULT: Failure - No Task displayed. (cannot create a Calendar Overlay of other Calendar Overlays)

Whether you want to select the calendar overlay in the another calendar list Calendar overlay settings?
Per my test, I’m not able to select the existing Calendar overlay view in the calendar overlay settings.
I recommend you creating an Separate Calendar Overlay for combining all the resource name with combining two views.
If I misunderstand your requirement, please provide some screenshots to let us know more information.
