I am experiencing an issue with displaying images on a SharePoint page. I have 3 front end servers. The images are displaying as thumbnails correctly on 2 of the front ends, but on one of the front ends(the one that users are hitting) is showing a black(or red) x on the image and shows a 404 message when the image URL is clicked.

How did you show the images on the SharePoint page?

Please copy the URL of the image and paste it in the Address bar of IE, check if you can access the image directly. If not, you need to check if the network is accessed.

And please upload a problematic image into a Picture library, then show the image from the Picture library on the page, test again, compare the result.
