As per article ID 3023897, it doesn't work if you share the Team Site with a distribution list that contains external contacts.  What the article doesn't say is that the same is true for a mail enabled security group too.

What happens is that the email "saying blah wants to share blah with you" gets sent to the entire distribution list but with one accept invitation URL.  So the first recipient might get in, but others won't.  The SharePoint invitation hasn't expanded the distribution list to send them each a unique invitation URL.

The 'solution' for most people is just to add the external users individually to the SharePoint Group.  But going forward this means that IT are having to maintain the existing distribution list/mail enabled security group plus the new SharePoint Group, whereas all your other SharePoint Groups for internal users just use the existing group.  Inevitably an external user is going to be added or removed from the distribution list/mail enabled security group and not the SharePoint Group or vice versa and then there will be problems.
