Our Search application have 8 million items in search index and we are getting search crawl performance issues in production environments and the crawls are taking long time to complete and causing heavy cpu and ram usage on SQL side.

What’s the type of crawl you used? Try to use incremental crawl which only crawl the new and updated items.
