Hi, 

I would like to know if there is a way of creating approval workflows automatically when uploading a document into a file in the sharepoint online without having to assign them . For instance, if I have the File EXAMPLE i'd like to receive automatic approval requests when uploading documents A, B & C without assigning workflows to each of the Documents. In other words, I want to know if you can assign automatic approval workflows to files (containing documents) instead of just documents themselves.

Hi john,

For your request, I suggest you creating a workflow associate with this document library (maybe files as you said) and selecting the checkbox "creating a new item will start this workflow" when you using the OOB approval workflow 2010 in UI.

Or use SharePoint Designer to create a workflow and select "start workflow automatically when an item is created".
