Hi, I only worked with On-Prem SP2013  before.  I used to have to edit just the HTML version of the master file when customizing master file for our site, upload that and SP2013 will generate the .master file.

We're moving to SPO.  I noticed the master page HTML is hard to read or edit.  Do I just work directly with the .master file when customizing the master page file?

You can edit the html version or .master version, both works. Once you edit the .master page then you need to continue the same path.
