I work at a wireless ISP and can say that you would likely be far better off to get the support of the the vendor and possibly their support team. We''ve worked with Motorola/RadWin/Karlnet radios and had good success in tuning up the algorithms for morning fade.

We found that they were more than willing to work with us to develop better connectivity strategies (not just limited to frequency) as it benefited more than just us and gave them an advantage. Especially because we had thousands of their radios out there in production and they could get really good field testing with our involvement.

Assuming you can''t get them involved, you''ll need to have the following information:
1) languages supported
2) if you need a compiler/linker/etc
3) if you can work in an extensibility mode, or if you have to rewrite firmware
4) information on how to update/flash the device or upload/update code

Just as another tip, we used an external ''antenna'' approach and just hooked the radios up to the AP with a heavily attenuated wire as the noise floor in the building was just too high to test.
