I was just curious as to how many of you own your own business writing software on your own and if you do, what advice could you give to a person going into this type of thing? I''m self employed. Have been since 1990 when I decided to offer my electronic design talents to to small businesses rather than punch a clock. I started programming seriously about a year and a half ago and landed my first project last September. I had spent a lot of time building up my library of database aware widgets which I still think was a good investment even though I switched toolkits for this project. The money can be very good. Keep at it!

It would be great to be my own boss. I wouldn''t say your wasting your time unless you have doubts about whether your product will sell. If you don''t think there is a huge need for the software you should reconsider.

I''m self employed but I write bespoke applications and troubleshoot existing systems. I love working for myself and don''t think I could ever go back to working for someone else.

It''s all about what you want. If you want to be your own boss you will find a way to do it but if you feel more secure working for someone else you may be better off following that path. There is no job security in being self employed as you only ever have yourself to depend on.
