By default, the Windows SDK is installed to your local disk here: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0a.  The Windows SDK components installed on a 64-bit machine are true 64-bit, and therefore do not install to \Program Files (x86).  This is true of the standalone Windows SDK (that you can install from the Microsoft Download Center) and the Windows SDK components which are installed in-box with Visual Studio 2008.
