I have seen comments on various sites including the Microsoft site that said not to have long running workflows.   But these never show why and what is the definition of a long running workflow.   I tried to do a search here to find out why but couldn't come up with any good articles or answered questions.

I have a SPD 2013 workflow that pauses until an expiration date, which could be anywhere from 1-5 years from the issue date.  If this is a bad thing?  If so, what's the workaround?

You could set the 1-5 years in the action "Pause until date" in the workflow.
