To the best of my knowledge, when your server is running internally it is available to the instance of the IDE [Eclipse or what ever you chose] and is within the same runtime. When you run it externally, it is running as a normal server within its own runtime.

An external server is available to one and all, like it should be. So internal if you need to debug and have total control and external for a normal runtime environment.
