Ran into situation where this code generated a record marked for deletion and left the original record unchanged. This has worked OK for a long time.

You say it worked after restarting the laptop.  Did you try just exiting and restarting FoxPro?  Restarting FoxPro will clear any variables previously set, close all open files, etc., which in my experience is the reason why a second run of a program might fail.
