I am a software developer, and I would like to expand my skills by learning more about Server Architecture, Active Directory, etc.  To accomplish this, I would like to build a VM Server I can use to help build out different environments and test inter connectivity between servers from my home.  For example, create a VM for a SQL Server Instance, another for a Domain Controller, and a third for a Sharepoint/Webserver.

Cost is always an issue, and I would like to build a fairly nice machine to handle this (8+ gigs of ram, also use it as a File Server for home use, etc).  It is hard to justify the cost for a nice machine that may see 20-30% usage, so I am thinking of replacing my normal home machine with this new server.  The problem is, I am not sure I want my wife and kids to have access to the root Server 2008 OS that would run all of the VM's.  I don't think the user experience would be what they are used to, and if I give my wife the Admin rights she normally has as the boss of the house, I may end up with an administrative nightmare (really honey, I don't know where you SQL Server VM went, I just deleted that icon over there).

I apologize for my inexperience here.  What I would like is for a system where there are multiple VM's running. One of which would have Windows 7 installed for my families use.  The family should be able to boot up the server, and rather than be taken to Server 2008 and have to choose the Windows 7 VM and RDP into it, have that VM automatically launch.  This way, if the kids reboot the server, they don't see Server 2008 at all.  This way we can replace our main PC with the new server (and it can be an awesome machine), the new server can be in my kitchen and see every day use, and the kids\wife won't have to worry about everything else that is going on under the hood.

Is there a way for Server 2008 to automatically launch into one of it's VM's (be it RDP or another process)?  Or, do I need to install Server 2008, launch the VM manually, and then never log off of the RDP?  Is there any way to do what I am looking at?

  We do recommend you to go either a DUAL boot option or installing Virtual PC in windows 7 machine. So that you can create multiple VM's for your test environment, and there by keeping the BOSS of the house happy :) to make her comfortable to work with win7 instead of windows 2008.
