I am trying to skin the default site coming with CS 2009 Template Pack for Sharepoint 2010 but always getting a "Error Creating Control" in Design mode.

Error Creating Control – xxx. Object reference not set to an instance of an object”, where xxx is a control in CSDefaultSite.master.

I know, Sharepoint Designer 2010 is not a recommended tool for a real-life editing but I also can't see anything in Design mode when trying to edit the default site in VS 2010.

This is a by-design behavior or I am doing something wrong?

I guess most of the controls are custom controls (without design support).
