The iterations have a start data and end date associated to them.

Lets take an example, if you have two iterations created in tfs 11, lets say iteration1 and iteration2 and you set up the start date of iteration1 as 20th feb to 8th march and iteration 2 as 9th march to 19th march then in tfs task board you should be able to see iteration2 as the current iteration. This is simply picked up by looking at the start and end date of the iteration vs the date today.
