Can anyone spell out pitfalls for making an existing work item field required and not adding in a default value?

Implemented a new field a month ago, but did not make it required at the time. Now we'd like to. 

The only issue I can see is that it would leave many work items in an error state until they are updated with a value in the required field. 

What other potential issues or impacts could we experience with those work items in being in error state?

Thank you for posting here.

As you said, the work will be in error state if you make an existing work item field required and not adding in a default value like the following picture:

It will make you cannot save any change made to the work items unless you input value for the field. So I think you'd better specify default value for the field.
