I am developing a proof of concept project that comprises of a stand alone headless device. The project is to be used as a piece of musical hardware and would require running commecially available music software. Rather than go into a lengthly describtion of exactly what I am trying to do I would rather start by asking a key question which would help steer me on the correct path as to what resources I should be looking into.

I intend to look into using an Intel Joule board and running Windows IOT.  I want to install music software on this setup  and then control that software via an interface. In esscence, the device is akin to a laptop running music production software and using a hardware controller to interract with it. It would need to be standalone and headless. The music software that I require the Windows IOT to run are generically known as VST's (Virtual Music Techonolgy) and use the extension .dll

In other words can I install software that I would ordinarily use on standard Windows installations and use in the same mannerin IOT? I have already made a protoype setup utilizing an Intel Compute Stick and am keen to look into more efficient platforms for development.
