I am planning to deploy Lab Management 2010. I currently have a very underpowered HyperV server (4gb, hosts AD on physical) but intend to upgrade to 16GB.

There is NO hard requirement for you to have a AD VM to start using Lab. You can easily create a single VM environment and get started with Lab right away.
