The Kinect for Windows V2 requires Windows 8.1. The Kinect for Xbox One only works for Xbox One. Unlike the first generation sensor these will not be interchangeable.

Kinect V2 connects to the pc via USB 3.0. Applications have "readers" that access different data streams from the kinect. These come in as color, infrared, depth and skeleton tracking frames at about 30 frames per second.

The SDK comes with various samples that show how to access this information, display color, depth, infrared and body tracking data, as well as 3D scanning.
