I did a system restore and chose the option to save all files, ect.  I lost a very expensive item of software and I don't have the disc to reload it.  Is there anyway to retrieve this program?

When you do system restore of laptop (I assume you're not talking about system restore of Windows because that'll affect software you installed after the restore checkpoint only), the partition table is completely overwritten and there's no chance to retrieve any software previously installed on it.
