New to Excel Services but I like what I see so far with using the REST API to expose excel workbook pivot tables.   Correct me if I'm wrong about anything I am about to write.

Situation:  I have a SharePoint list that I have exported to an Excel workbook.  In the Excel workbook, there is a PivotTable, a Pivot Chart and a slicer.

Problem: (1) I need to expose the PivotTable, Pivot Chart and the slicer on a page so that users can use the slicer to filter the data.  (2) I also need to have the workbook automatically updated when changes are made to the list.

1) Using an Excel Web Access Web part but the workbook doesn't seem to refresh unless the Excel workbook is opened.

As I understand it, there is a one-way sync between SP and the workbook meaning that when changes occur in the SP list the Excel workbook should be updated automatically.

My experience was that Excel had to be opened in order to be refreshed.

I didn't try using the REST api, as it wasn't released yet. Not sure of the benefits, but it is my experience that things never work as advertised in the glossy brochure.
