I'm trying to find a way to set the "Parent" setting to Show instead of Hide by default, so that every time I view the backlog, I see the Epics/Feature/Story grouping.

I have tried to repro the scenario which you have specified. When I login for the first time the default value for the Parent was set to hide, later when I change to show and again tried to login the default value which I was getting is show and request to try by changing the value to show and let us know the feedback.
