I've installed the tools and sdk for Visual Studio 2012 several times and despite that the Azure project templates don't appear in Visual Studio.
The only one I can get to appear is Azure Cloud Service, and this only appeared after I had manually extracted CloudService_cs_1033.zip to a "CloudService" folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplates\CSharp\Cloud\1033.
The only zip files I can find under C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplates\CSharp\Cloud\ are CloudService_cs.zip and CloudService_cs_1033.zip.
I've seen another thread (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsazuredevelopment/thread/b6906946-212c-4f45-b2c1-6d1ef30a6651) in this forum entitled "Azure project templates not visible in Visual Studio" but the only suggestions there were:
- reinstall Visual Studio 2012 (not very helpful: I don't want to spend all the time necessary to do that, including possibly having to then reinstall various extensions) when all I am missing is a couple of template folders, or
- to unzip the various zip files manually (again, no use to me as the zip files aren't there).
Given that this seems to be a common problem, can't Microsoft either issue a corrected installed, or b) provide a copy of the template zip files?
It is also frustrating that the Azure web sites require .net 4 rather than .net 4.5 framework. It is as if the Azure team have not been talking to the Visual Studio or MVC teams.
I want to investigate using Azure and other Microsoft cloud offerings, but it is (seemingly avoidable) problems like these which made me (and presumably others) abandon attempts last year to do so.
Every environment is different, but for me re-installing does usually solve the problem.
The new SDK is pretty good and I have installed it on 4 separate dev environments and had no problem with Visual Studio 2012.
The .net 4.5 upgrade is coming this month. Microsoft is updating the PaaS/IaaS offerings to use Windows Server 2012 w/.net 4.5. I had the same frustrations, but visual studio 2012/.net 4.5 just launched a few weeks ago, you can't expect everything propagated immediately in the cloud/SDK/tools/web portal etc.
