Want to create an application? Create it. As usually, start from the available Visual Studio template. By the way, learn how it works and then learn how to create projects from empty solution; this is very useful. One important skill you might need to get when developing WPF application: the ability to forget System.Windows.Forms. The knowledge of Forms will interfere with your WPF learning rather then help.
