In previous versions of SharePoint, there was an option to email a link to a document directly in sharepoint library by selecting 'Send To ->Email a Link' and default mail opens and link is sent to the recipient. In latest version, SharePoint 2016 introduced concept of 'Share' to email a document to another user. But i learnt that this requires configuring 'My Sites' for all the users.

The workflow can be started manually or automatically when a document is item to the document library or modified, but the workflow cannot start when the item is selected.
