We have had problems with personnel opening Word documents from on premise SharePoint using Word 2016. They receive an error that looks like this below, in place of what appears to be the old document information panel.

My understanding is that Microsoft Office 365 Update 1710 fixed this problem for users of SharePoint Online, but there is no fix for on-premise versions.   I just want to verify that before we look at other solutions.  Is it possible that this will be repaired by January 2018, as described in the article here?  Or will on-premises deployments have to figure this out on their own, perhaps come up with local add-in?

Currently, Word SharePoint Properties Pane is in development and testing. This feature is still improving. It would have problems or issues temporarily.

Please wait for it to be released and then try it.
