Because of the nature of the program, being nominated for the MS MVP award, let alone being awarded it, it something that is directly out of your control.  there are several posts that people in the know have made over the years about what they look for in candidates, I've linked to them below, please check them out carefully.

The important thing to keep in mind is that this is not a objective certification you can earn by taking an exam. It is a completely subjective award based on the views of others in the community.

My advice would be to not worry about the award and to focus on the quality and value you can deliver to the SharePoint community, both here at the MSDN forums and throughout the internet.  Don't do it to get noticed or win awards, do it to honestly help people solve problems that they may or may not be aware of.  In the big scheme of things, that's the more important thing to be doing, and it will not only help those around you but also help you to become a stronger technologist and SharePoint resource.
