We've had our environment in a failover setup but we've found that this isn't the case. Here are some details:

Last night our primary SQL somehow failed over all databases to the second node, but our SP was still working. The site was up for hours up until lunch time when no one was able to access the site. I wasn't quite sure why so I decided to change the SQL alias to point to the 2nd SQL server where it has become primary due to auto failover the night before. After changing SQL alias to point to the 2nd server, the site started to work again.
