I set the internal IP on a 2012 R2 VM to static, and gave it the same IP address it had, and now I can no longer connect to this VM from anywhere outside of the virtual network.

I've confirmed RDP connection works from another machine in the network, but nothing can connect to it from the internet. It just times out.

So far I've tried the following with no change in behavior:

Checked the NSG to make sure the connection is passing without being blocked. It isn't being blocked.
Reset the RDP config on the VM twice.
Restarted the VM twice.
Redeployed the VM and repeated the previous steps without any change.
Reversed the change to make it Dynamic. Retested - no change.
Reversed it back to Static and retested without change.
Restarted the VM again after changing it back to static. No change.

I've been beating my head against this for almost two hours. I have no idea what else I can do. 

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi, 

Did you change the Private IP in the guest OS?

Any changes you make needs to be done on the Portal. You should not change any network related settings in the Guest OS level. 

As you mentioned that you are able to RDP via private IP from a VM within the same VNET, try the below steps. 

• Remove the NSG from the NIC and Subnet (Just for testing purpose)
• Download the RDP file again from the VM blade.
• Before RDP, try to check if the port 3389 is open. You can do this by entering your Public IP and port in this site.(https://ping.eu/port-chk/)
• If it is open, then try RDP. If you get any error, post it here.
