The only way I've figured out to "turn off the Kinect for Windows" green LED light is to unplug the USB cable or power the Kinect off (or turn off the computer). Any other suggestions? Uninstall the Kinect for Windows software (SDK)? Prior to installation of a lot of software, the light used to be off most of the time. Can I detect which software is turning the light on? Thanks!

The green LED is a connection/power indicator. If you unplug from USB or the power dongle it will turn off. The SDK will only provide detail on whether the device is already in use if you run another application.

If your concern is the emitted light, then you can choose to cover it. If you are concerned about whether it is on without you knowing, there are "privacy" devices you can purchase. Since the device itself *cannot* operate with just USB power, unplugging it from the dongle will disable the functionality as well.
