Kinect for XBox vs Kinect for Windows    I am interested in purchasing a number of Kinect for Windows devices for a commercial application, having difficulty finding accurate specs for the two different devices.  An earlier post suggested that "there is a difference in the firmware, that clips the depth image much closer to the device than the Xbox version and thus supports "near mode", which the Xbox version does not".  Unable to find suitable information from the MS website, I called a Microsoft store in Scottsdale Az.   I was told that there was no difference between the two devices, that the $100 difference in price represented commercial licensing.  The Xbox device could not be used commercially.  Understood. So far. Then asked about the sensor, was told something about the near field sensor being different.  The rep advised that "unfortunately, we haven't been trained in that".   Great.  I then asked for Bill Gates, was told he was no longer with the company.  I am working on a startup that may utilize 1000's of similar sensor devices, was basically told to go down the street to some other store.   I created a login to this forum just to ask this question.  Hopefully there is a moderator out there somewhere.  btw the use of the word "unfortunately" is rather poor form for Customer Service.

You can purchase online or at gamestop kinect for windows faster then going to a windows store in-person. Their is near-mode and some resolution differences between xbox kinect and kinect for windows if i remember reading some of the blogs and docs correctly before but mostly near-mode. If you are an educational vendor you might could get the educational discount thats supposed to come out this fall (will post link later if rob or kinect team doesnt post first).
