Whenever I start Messenger I'm asked for my "Display Name". I've checked that the display name is already saved in the application (Tools->Options) and I've checked that my .NET profile has "First Name" and "Last Name" saved (https://accountservices.msn.com/editprof.srf).
I've read this thread: http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.messenger&tid=a909aefa-ceb1-4546-9f6b-b235c0828a49&cat=&lang=&cr=&sloc=&p=1 but it doesn't solve my problem.

I might have solved this by accident but I'm not sure what I've done. The Windows Live "Help and Supprt" talks about a private profile and a shared profile. It gives a link for editing profiles as http://g.live.com/0HE_TRACKSTAR_ENGB9/148100 which is different to the link in my first post. When I followed this link the first thing I was asked was if I want to "Confirm my name". Sure enough I was eventually able to "Save" the confirmation (yes, I want to confirm my name...yes, I really want to confirm my name...oh please...how many more times are you going to ask if I want to confirm my name?!?). Now Messenger seems to login correctly.
