A simple question about SharePoint Online Document Library Versioning.

I've a big SharePoint Online site collection (about 100 GB) with some document libraries and a lot of documents.

Each document library has the default versioning settings (enabled major, 500 version retention).

Now I notice that this site has 30GB of real documents and 70 GB of old version. Then I want to reduce the retention value from 500 to 5 in order to clean up space.

How I can delete automatically obsolete versions?

Is there a timer job that automatically perform this action?

Searching on internet, I find that the only solution is to manually update each document. Is it true?

Hi Sergio,

To change the number of version in document library, I recommend you going to Library settings->Versioning settings->change the "Keep the following number of major versions" number to 5. The SharePoint will delete the old version documents at a scheduled time.

Besides, if your organization limits the number of versions that it stores, the oldest versions are permanently deleted when the limit is reached. They are not sent to the Recycle Bin.
