trial licenses don't expire, so I would have to maintain a "first run" date somewhere in my app. Of course, a user could simply uninstall and reinstall to defeat any time-limit. It seems like I would need to store the "first run" date on an external server.

What prompted this was that a user purchased my app and found that it did not run properly on their particular phone (a Verizon HTC 8X). My app runs fine on my ATT HTC 8X, so I suspect that the user's phone has either SW or HW problems. Both are running GDR2, same SoC, etc. The user needs a refund since my app won't work. All of this mess could have been avoided if my app had a time-limited trial so that the user could have tried it out thoroughly before purchasing. I don't like feature-limited trials because they don't let the user see everything they're purchasing ahead of time.

You are right, the licensing does not support what you want to do.  Due to sandboxing you are correct that you cannot store a date.  You could perhaps create a webservice to store this type of information.  Maybe someone else has an idea as well!
