We experienced an issue with a synchronization connection not being run in FIM.  This is causing UPS profiles to not update.  So no problem, I do the following:

So, I'm waiting for the full sync to complete with the expectation that it will sync up with the existing profiles.  Unfortunately, UPS decided to classify a good majority of the profiles as stub profiles/"Profiles Missing from Import" and creates new profiles using the the account name format "NetBiosName:SamAccountName" instead of "NetBiosName\SamAccountName".

The DistinguishedName attribute between both profiles are identical.  FIM management agent operations seem to be working correctly;  there are no errors.  I suspect it is something to do with the final step when it needs to sync the values back to the SP sync database.
