We have a SharePoint 2013 site migrated to office 365 in Dec 2016. From Jan 2017 to till date no audit report was generated.

Recently we turned on all the audit configuration checkboxes and generated a custom audit report from 01-Jan-17 to till date. Except add,delete operations rest of the events like security member add/delete were included. But why the delete and add operations are missing? Is it the fact that no add/delete operations were performed from last 9 months?

Yesterday I added some list items and deleted. After that I generated the report again. I could see them in the report.

SharePoint doesn't actually track and store a lot of this information until you check the boxes.  So its not suprising that some actions were missing from the audit log prior to enabling the operations.  Some actions will also be tracked for usage logs, like downloading a file, so those will show.  But the audit logs are the only thing that tracks creation of new items or deletion of old items.
