I've set up Managed Navigation in one of my SharePoint 2016 sites. I like the implementation of nested menus better than is available in Structural Navigation.  Is there a way to export/import the term set or reference a common term set so to achieve global navigation across site collections?

Managed Navigation is specific to each site collection.  It doesn't support using the same termset for more than one site collection.  To the best of my knowledge there is no way to create a global navigation system using managed navigation.
