One of our SharePoint users who uses SharePoint for co-authoring frequently does not have the icon on the upper right of the Word document opened through his desktop Word app.  Others have it.

Where is the setting in SharePoint or in Word that allows that icon appear for documents opened from SharePoint that have versioning?

What version of Office are they using at their end? If they are using Office365/Office 2016 they should be able to view the history from one of the two options below..
