We currently have Azure AD Connect installed on a Domain Controller.  I no longer need this server as a Domain Controller, so my thought was to demote the Domain Controller back to a member server and continue using the AD Connect software running on it.

My question is whether or not demoting the DC will affect the AD Connect Sync tool.

Hello JamesMilesPC , 

As long as you have another domain controller available and discoverable by the AD connect server , you would not face any issue . AD connect server does not have specific dependency on the same Domain controller where it is installed. The AD connect is capable of doing domain controller discovery and finding a DC . Alternatively , to be sure you can go ahead and use the Synchronization Manager console to edit the Local AD connector properties in the connectors tab as shown below. 

You can configure the setting "Only use preferred domain controller " and you can setup multiple domain controllers there. If the current domain controller is listed there , you can remove the domain controller role from the server. In case you have any further queries , feel free to let us know.
