I lead a development team in a small company.  The dev team hasn't done anything with Sharepoint as yet, however, the infrastructure group went ahead and created an extranet which includes a Discussion Board.  Seems the users are unhappy with the way attachments are accessed, they don't want to have to open the thread and select "View Properties" to get to the attachment, as I understand it, they want to be able to open the attachment directly from the discussion list.

Any advice would be much appreciated, especially suggestions as to what tools/skill set may be required.  My team is mostly ASP.Net/C# developers with very little SP expertise.  We have access to SP Designer, but I have a feeling this enhancement may not be feasible.

You can do that but it wont be that easy.

You have to add a new column and call it for example Attachment.

Add an event handler on ItemAdded (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.sharepoint.spitemeventreceiver.itemadded.aspx).

This event will basically generate the contents of the column Attachment. You can construct the attachment URL easily.


Typical Attachment URL: http://SiteName/Lists/DiscssionsListName/Attachments/DiscussionID/AttachmentName.Extension

You can grab all the required information to build the URL in the event handler and simply construct an anchor tag and place it inside the column.

Finally, edit the "Subject" view to add the new Attachment column.
