I have an old Visual Studio 2008 project I want to update using Visual Studio 2017, but I am being told it needs to be migrated. Can someone advise how I go about this.

Welcome to the MSDN forum.
Usually, we will suggest that do not directly upgrade the solution from VS 2008 to VS 2017. You can try to open it from VS 2008 to 201, 2012, 2015 then 2017, since there have lots of changes and improvement between VS 2008 and VS 2017.
You can also note the project structure in VS 2008 with folders, files and all, you make the same structure in VS2017, and you start copying class files to the project folders from VS2008 to 17 at the directory level.
