In Project Server 2010, I have a project level custom field (free text type). If I try to create a view in Project Center and group the projects according to the free text field, I am unable to see the view. Error saying 'Cannot communicate to the server' was coming earlier but after upgrading to SP1, the error has stopped but the view simply refuses to load. If the free text field grouping is removed, it works absolutely fine.

Second issue is that in Timesheet, configured in single entry mode, some grids are greyed out against tasks. I am able to enter actuals (% complete and day wise actuals) against some tasks but some grids are randomly greyed out totally, without any visible logic.

for your timesheet issue: cells are greyed out when they don't fit to tracking method of a project. If grids are "randomly" greyed out, I assume that different tracking methods are applied to your projects. If you can't enter %complete and hours per day, you should be able to enter Actual Work and Remaining Work in left grid. (This is the third of three available tracking methods.)

You can change tracking method within Project Professional: File - Info in the very right pane.

Your project Server administrator can change default tracking method in Project Web App - Server Settings - Tasks Settings and Display: Hours of Work done per period (your admin can also force PMs to use one method).
