When I try to run a 2010 platform workflow, I am given the following error message: "Sorry, something went wrong. Workflow Failed to start due to an internal error"

The list workflow on the 2010 platform looks like this:
Assign To Do item to username lookup from a list using parameters
then send an Email to username lookup from a list using parameters

I created a custom action in the list to perform this workflow. I select an item from the list (irrelevant but it allows the custom action to be executed), click the action button, fill in parameters, then get the error message after the workflow attempts to run.
