I have repeatedly been frustrated by people who "waste" other people''s posts
that ask questions. By "waste" I mean publicy replying to a post without
offering a useful answer. I must admit that some of my questions have not
been specific enough so I get unhelpful answers. My bad. But I often get
replies that read something like "I''ve had this problem too" with no actual
anser to the question. This makes the question look like it''s been answered
when it hasn''t, and people like me who like to answer unanswered questions
skip right over those posts. Like some others here, I often look for
unanswered questions to help others as I''ve been helped. I usually don''t
waste my time answering posts that have already been answered. People
should only give specific answeres. I''ve actually seen responses that read
"Have you tried the Help?". Useless.

As much as I''ve kvetched about the people who give useless answeres, I do
say that the onus for a useful question is on the poster. I''ve come up with
some helpful hints for people who ask and answer questions:

For the asker:
If you are a beginner, say so. This will help you get answeres you can
implement.
Make your questions specific.
Give examples of what you''ve already done so people don''t respond with what
you''ve already done.
Provide your email address so others can privately ask for clarification.

For the answerer:
If you need clarification, send a private email to the poster so the public
question doesn''t look like it''s been answered.
Only give specific answeres.

Please feel free to respond to this post, publicly or privately, with
positive or negative remarks. I welcome constructuve criticism.

Thank you.

Actually, I don''t think that''s always a "useless" answer. It would appear
that a number of people seem to feel it''s okay to ask questions here (and
other newsgroups) without making any effort to solve the problem on their
own first.
As much as I''ve kvetched about the people who give useless answeres, I do

Sorry, but I don''t agree with your suggestions of using private e-mail for
clarification. The point of newsgroups is that everyone benefits. If you
take the discussion off-line, then it doesn''t get archived in Google, so
others with the same problem won''t find it.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I think asking for clarification in the ng is fine. What I''m surprised

Given the fact that most postings get more than one answer, I don''t
think your premise of "a question that appears answered doesn''t get
further answers" is correct.
